Courses

  • I am applying for a job and want to take a first aid/CPR course. Which course should I take?
In Alberta, the industry standard is Standard First Aid with CPR/AED (Level C).

Basic Life Support (BLS) is for people who work in a team environment and is often a “Health Care Provider” i.e. Nurses, Dental, First Responder and Firefighters to name a few.

The only way to know the correct first aid & CPR course right for you is to contact the organization that is requiring the certification and ask them what course you need. If you require certification for your profession or school program you will usually have documentation providing the specific course title you require.

If you are not sure which workplace course you need, as a general rule, you should do the 2 day – Standard First Aid with CPR/AED (Level C) or online + 1 day – Blended Standard First Aid with CPR/AED (Level C) . You can’t go wrong with more training.

If you are a healthcare provider, allied health professional, or student, you likely require Basic Life Support (BLS).

  • Is there an age restriction on the courses?
There is no age restriction on the courses we offer. Participants need to be able to understand the material, demonstrate the skills, and stay for the entire course.

  • What should I bring to my course?
We recommend bringing paper and a pen to take notes, a water-bottle and your lunch to the course. We also recommend you wear comfortable clothing (such as active wear) as you will be moving about the room and practicing various skills on the floor.

  • Will my course include a test?
Yes, written knowledge evaluations (all multiple choice) are required certification courses.

If English is your second language, if you have a learning disability or difficulty reading, please discuss this with your Instructor at the start of your course or during a break.

If you do not successfully complete the knowledge evaluation you may review your incorrect responses with the instructor immediately after the test.

  • What if I incomplete the course?
First Aid Training Calgary wants every candidate to be successful! All courses run by First Aid Training Calgary come with a Guarantee of Completion. If you do not successfully complete your registered course with First Aid Training Calgary, you can retake the course – on us! Your only fee is the examination fee ($5-$25, depending on the course).

First Aid Training Calgary’s Guarantee is subject to 100% course attendance and participation, completion of all assignments and must be used within one year of the in-completed or failed course. Please note First Aid Training Calgary’s Guarantee does not apply to recertification courses and is valid for second attempt only.

Certifications

  • Can I take a recertification if my certificate is expired?
First Aid & CPR (CPR or Standard First Aid with CPR/AED)

Alberta legislation does not allow you to recertify  if your certification is expired.  Your recertification must be completed prior to (or on the day of) the expire date.  This is not our policy.  This is a policy all training agencies in Alberta are bound by.

International or online-only certificates are not valid. When in doubt, please contact us prior.

    Basic Life Support (BLS)

To attend a BLS renewal, you must have current Heart & Stroke BLS Provider certification OR if your BLS is expired but no more than 12 months expired, you may still come to a renewal if you complete the BLS Provider Renewal Prerequisite Challenge.

If your BLS is more than 12 months expired, you are not able to complete the renewal and will be to take the BLS Provider course instead.

  • Will I have to do physical activity during the class?
Our goal is to help you feel more knowledgeable about first aid practices and better equipped to deal with a situation where first aid is required.

Courses do require a certain degree of physical activity. For most people, the physical activity involved in a First Aid and/or CPR course should not pose a threat to their health. There are a small number of people who may find the physical activities in a course strenuous.

If you have any concerns about the level of activity involved in the course, please consult with your physician prior to attending the course. If you are unsure if you should participate in any aspect of the course involving physical activity, please see the course Instructor before the course begins.

If you are on modified work duties and will be unable to demonstrate CPR, you will need to postpone your course to a later date.

Upgrades

  • I registered for CPR, but I later found out that I need Emergency or Standard First Aid. Can I change my registration?
Yes. If it is before your course, please email us at info@FirstAidTrainingCalgary.com, call us at 403-407-0756 or contact us via our website live chat. You can pay the difference and upgrade to the correct course.  If you are currently registered for a Blended course, a $10 – $25 + GST fee will apply in addition to the difference in price as the online course we already will have assigned you in non-refundable.

  • I took CPR a few days ago, but now I know I should have taken Emergency or Standard First Aid. Can I upgrade after the course?
Yes, if it is within 30 days after you completed your course & you took your course with us. You will need to join an upcoming course to learn the extra content. You pay the difference as well as the fee for a second certificate ($20 + GST), and upgrade to the correct course.

  • I took CPR several months ago, but now I need Emergency or Standard First Aid. Can I upgrade at this point?
If it has been more than 30 days after your course, you cannot upgrade. You will need to re-register and take the full course that you require.

  • I already have a CPR/AED certification but now I need Standard First Aid with CPR/AED, can I upgrade or just take the “Standard First Aid” portion?
Unfortunately no.  Alberta government regulations require that any time Emergency First Aid or Standard First Aid is taught, CPR/AED is included.  As a result, no first aid/CPR training agencies are able to offer this.

CPR/AED can be taught on it’s own but not the other way around.

English as an Additional Language

  • My English is not very strong. I’m worried that I may not understand the course material or be able to do the test. What should I do?
You may like to consider inviting an English speaking friend or family member to take the course with you. Your friend will be able to help you during your course.

Please let us know in advance in case any accommodations need to be made. Translators or aides will not receive a certificate unless they register for the course. They do not need to participate in activities or demonstrate the skills.

Once you have registered for your course, you can email us request we send you an electronic version of the course material to review prior.

  • Do you offer courses in other languages?
Yes! Several of our instructors speak other languages, including French, Urdu, Hindi, & Punjabi. While we do not run public classes in other languages, you can book a private first aid class for your group.
